Tsavo: A Wonderful Jewel That Epitomizes A True East African Safari Excursion. A Sojourn That Echoes Epic Reminiscences.

Under the enclose of the tent a ear splitting splash followed by heightened grunts awoke me beckoning me to think it was daybreak! The hippos in a hurry to make it to the pond must have run at bursting haste to enter the water just before sunrise above the azure skies.

Still dazed and not feeling like climbing out of the warm bed, I peer outside the gazebo, it was quite dark and the hippos were grunting so close by. I opened the tent and in the flashlight, round eyes spaced apart looked back at me out of the dark.

This is only 4am and the hippo pod was abuzz. What-ever changed about the thinking that hippos graze out throughout the night - this is certainly a Tsavo safari.

The pool dazzled beneath the reflection of a clear star spotted sky. Now, fully awake, I peer into the pond for more life and several meters from the grunting hippos, asleep in the edge of the pool are two crocodiles. I cannot get back to sleep now with plenty happening beneath my porch.

It is evident today to figure out how Finch Hatton, the celebrated fan of Karen Blixen and author of 'Out of Africa' could be so charmed with Tsavo that his quote '"Tell them I'll be in Tsavo", has turned the stunning cozy tented camp in the middle of Tsavo West park to a hallmark of reputation around East African safaris circuits.

Designed around innate pools filled with waters from the Chyulu Hills plus the magnificent Kilimanjaro, it's heartening to trek the camp environs. You just cannot avoid this walk!

Following a healthy breakfast, an aid follows us for the trek highlighting the bird's species plus the crocodiles. Watching the hippos open their colossus mouths exposing red yellowish enamel you would not want to get near. Hippos are efficacious killers whenever it's an option between his territory and the intruder.

A Greyish crowned heron on a hippo's flip side gives a sigh of ease as the hippo trudges about the shallow pond. Modest footed African jacanas perch on the suspended leaves of the water lilies and a terrific white egret stands by the shores watching us.

On the patio of a shelter, 2 vibrant kingfishers dive inside the pools as the flowered Malachite and grey headed kingfishers on the bushes look on as two adolescent alligators bask in the sun next to the tent.

"This is actually an entire ecosystem" notes the guide. "There are zero fences therefore the wildlife have right of way." "During drought, elephants, giraffes, water bucks wander here when water is limited elsewhere".

It's unbelievable that the trek covering the grounds has lasted through breakfast to lunchtime. A dotted monitor lizard scampers ahead of our direction while it disappears into the dense shrub. Soon we arrive at the crocodile nursery by the pool where the spring water gushes.

A miniature crocodile lies about the plain stone oblivious of our presence. The crystal clear pool of bubbling water is rather vibrant with the little charges. We respect how this little one shall later grow into a giant sized crocodile. What a morning!
